Herbal Diet for Headache and High Blood Pressure – Stewed Pigeon with Gastrodia & Sanqi
Gastrodia elata (Tianma): Recorded in <Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica> as calming internal wind and relieving spasms, pacifying Liver yang, dispelling wind, and unblocking the channels. It is an essential herb for treating dizziness and headaches, suitable for both deficiency and excess patterns when used according to syndrome differentiation.
Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong): Also recorded in <Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica>, it promotes the movement of qi, relieves constraint, dispels wind and dampness, invigorates blood, and alleviates pain. This herb is pungent and warm with an ascending nature, guiding its action to the head. It is a key herb for headaches and can be used for wind-cold, wind-heat, wind-damp, blood deficiency, or blood stasis–related headaches when properly combined.
Panax notoginseng (Sanqi): According to <Compendium of Materia Medica>, it disperses blood stasis, stops bleeding, reduces swelling, and relieves pain. Sweet and slightly bitter in taste, warm in nature, it enters the Liver meridian and the blood level. It is known for stopping bleeding while also resolving stasis and promoting new blood, with the characteristic of “stopping bleeding without causing stasis and resolving stasis without damaging vital qi.”
Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Taizishen): Tonifies qi and strengthens the spleen, promotes the production of body fluids, and moistens the lungs. Its nature is mildly cool, and it belongs to the category of gentle, nourishing qi-tonifying herbs, providing supplementation without being overly warming.
